Lyon's music integrates broad themes of nature, from molecules and gemstones through to astronomical bodies, mathematical concepts to deep human emotions. Stylistically expressive, Lyon's compositions move from dramatic and powerful to lyrical and playful. Narrative, precision, duality and rhythm are all strong recurring elements. Deeply inspired by nature, Lyon's Doctor of Philosophy at Sydney Conservatorium of Music explored representations of nature in music using analogue algorithmic techniques, including pitch class sets, modes, spectral music, and the Infinity Series.
"I cannot imagine life without music, in all its various, beautiful forms. I see music as one of the markers for a healthy society, as well as being fascinated with its diversity. I wish to add to that. For me, to create music is part of being human."

Surrounded by descriptive arches of musical and programmatic colour from violin and cello, plus flute and clarinet, Sheldon’s emotive line was finely paced and placed against the harsh taped voice (recorded by Katia Molino) in English of the dark-sprite predator. This, the most theatrical piece, rich in despairing character’s narrative shone in my listening experience as one of the evening’s most compelling works.

... powerful in its directness and touching in its portrayal of dementia’s cruel and invasive nature ... The music deftly charges the narrative, with a particularly notable wealth of evocative and potent strings and inventive use of percussion.
